When measuring a round stoma, the skin barrier should fit snugly around the stoma, leaving a gap of about 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1.5 to 3 mm) between the stoma and the barrier. This helps protect the surrounding skin from irritation while allowing the stoma to expand and contract comfortably.
